This Recurring Dream

In this recurring dream
you are still around
it brings me back again
the stillness that we found
you squeeze my sleepy heart
and I flicker like a leaf
then gently fall apart....
in delicate relief

In this sweet lucid state
a minute lasts all night
but I lose you if I wake
the window is so slight
I kiss your lips just once,
lose all sense of time
and then you leave me here...
lost in lilac wine

I try to follow you
but slide into the light:
a holy hollow truth
shining through the night
I pull you to the ground
as darkness falls away
but morning brings me round...
and I lose you to the day

Night after night I dream about you
but day after day I wake without you
and time after time I lose you all over again

though dreams are not to keep
at least there's one to chase
for as long as I can sleep...
I can see your face
